A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. It usually follows but should not be confused with the opening credits, which are generally nothing more than a series of superimposed text.
As this quote from the wikipedia page for 'Title Sequence' explains, the opening sequence (a.k.a the title sequence) introduces the key characters, locations, and mood for the film. It establishes the events to follow in the storyline and may come in at any point in Todorov's Narrative Structure, and this will also outline the type of events to follow. For instance, should the opening sequence come in at the point of disequilibrium, we can immediately tell that there is going to be a lot of disruption to come in the story.
